Chapter Fourteen

A traitor in the mix

The walk didn’t seem as bad as the one we’d done to get to the cave, despite the hills being bigger and the path was less traveled. My feet were killing me and my legs were tired, but my arms were basically empty with only one banana and some water. The massive drink of water I’d had helped a lot too.

I was as refreshed as I could get under the circumstances and fear drove me on quite well.

Sarah was in an improved mood as well. She was certain we were being rescued and that Austen had saved us.

Becca seemed hopeful too.

I was the only one doubting all this.

I didn’t believe Pete and Jesse would have left us. And I didn’t think Maya would have either, even if I didn’t like her boyfriend. She wouldn't have left without a single sign. But I kept that to myself as we trudged along.

At the top of the hill, gasping for air and completely done, I turned to the right. The dim light coming from the moon and stars, made me squint, but I managed to find the tiny opening to the cave that the cat found. I bent down and picked up Cat, his glistening eyes in the jungle kept freaking me out.

We turned sideways and slipped through, staggering and trying not to trip on the jagged rocks. The air was cooler inside and we lost the sounds of bats or the odd creature creeping through the jungle, being left with only the slight echo of us.

We walked in an unspoken silence to the far side of the cave, peeking down on the ship.

The yacht at the end of the huge dock now had lights on inside, creating warmth and welcome, though no one was on the decks or in the windows. Nothing moved on board.

There was a fire on the beach, lighting up the edge of the water with an orange glow. The men with the guns were sitting on deck chairs and logs, laughing and drinking. There were more than double what we’d seen before. At least ten of them.

But of our friends only Austen was with them.

“See,” Becca whispered, “Austen’s with them, hanging out. It’s probably fine. Let’s just go down there.”

“Oh thank God,” Sarah whispered.

“Where’s everyone else?” I asked and took a few steps more to the edge. “Stay here, let me go take a look.” I handed my water and banana to Becca but clutched the cat.

“I’m coming with you,” Sarah demanded, too loudly. All three of us turned, checking to see if they had heard us but the waves on the shore and the laughter of the men protected us.

“No, Sarah. Stay here. Just in case.” I couldn't explain why I was scared but seeing Austen with them didn't make me feel like the guys and the guns were cool now.

“Why do you get to go?” She got her ass up and offered me a confrontational glare even the moonlight couldn’t hide.

“What if they’re bad and Austen is bait?” I asked softly.
